FOR FOLK'S SAKE
A live folk music band based in Palmerston North, New Zealand, performing traditional Irish, Scottish, English, American, New Zealand, and Australian music.
We play a lively mix of Irish, Scottish, and English traditional music and American bluegrass, with some Australian and NZ folk songs as well as the occasional 60s number (e.g. Creedence Clearwater Revival or the Beatles) thrown in. Our repertoire includes Irish drinking songs, Scottish airs, and bluegrass rags, giving a mix of fast and slow numbers and of songs and instrumentals. We can have between 6 and 10 band members playing, depending on who is free for a given performance (we are able to limit our numbers on request).
Our strengths are our fun songs (particularly the Irish drinking songs and the rousing bluegrass numbers), the fact that we have a lot of fun on stage which our audiences enjoy, and our crazy variety of instruments. Half the group play at least two different instruments on stage – three of us play at least four – so the audience gets to see a range of instruments (some of them not very common). During a normal performance we will play: guitar, tin whistle, bodhran, ukulele, harp, concertina, banjo, Irish bouzouki, recorder, fiddle, flute, and mandolin. Other instruments may also make an appearance for certain pieces (e.g. melodica, bass recorder).
We have performed at the Esplanade Day, Art on Edge, and the Festival of Cultures, as well as on stage for Manawatu Multicultural Council concerts and the Access Radio Sounds of Summer series. We do a mixture of instrumental numbers and songs, including Scottish airs, bluegrass breakdowns, and Irish drinking songs. Depending on the tune or song, we showcase a variety of Western folk instruments, including fiddle, tin whistle, banjo, mandolin, concertina, Irish bouzouki, bodhran, and Irish harp.
Throughout the year we play at at retirement homes and Senior Citizens groups, as well as providing entertainment at events for Probus and Rotary groups, Women's Institutes, Caravan Association rallys, and various other dinners and lunches. If you want to get your feet tapping and sing along with the old songs, get in touch!
